Our History

It all began in 1951. One of our founders, Jerry Pettis, acquired a $10,000 loan from the California Medical Association to start an organization that would offer CME/CE to medical professionals nationwide. Pettis was a public relations advisor for the Los Angeles County Medical Association and became a California Congressman later on in his career. The idea of helping medical professionals meet what is now considered Continuing Medical Education requirements all started with a trip to a physician’s office. While Pettis waited in the physician’s office, he noticed a stack of medical journals on the physician’s desk and wondered how any one doctor found the time to read and learn from the great amount of information in those journals. The following year, Pettis and his colleague, Claron Oakley, founded the Audio-Digest Foundation as a nonprofit affiliate of the California Medical Association, and launched its first recorded series of medical lectures.

Since 1952, the Audio Digest learning platform has evolved from a reel-to-reel tape-based business to one of the most technically advanced continuing medical education platforms. In our 60+ years of service to the medical profession, we have published more than 17,000 medical lectures across 16 specialties and issued more than 22,000,000 AMA PRA Category 1 CME Credits. We offer thousands of accredited courses from over 120 leading institutions, like Johns Hopkins, UCSF, and Cleveland Clinic.
